Volunteering at SCH

Volunteers play a very important role at Southside Community Hospital by helping us to provide high-quality, cost-effective healthcare to the community of Southside Virginia. Our volunteers provide another level of care, tender, loving care for our patients and family members. Our volunteers are our ambassadors to the community we serve, and they also serve our hospital in the following areas:

• Patient Transport Services
• Information Desk
• Admitting Assistance
• Emergency Department Volunteers
• Same Day Surgery Volunteers
• Summer Youth Volunteer Program (minimum 40 hours)
• College Student Volunteers (minimum 40 hours)
• Materials Management Volunteers
• Hospice Volunteers
• Gift Shop Volunteers

The Auxiliary of Southside Community Hospital is a volunteer membership-based organization. All volunteers are encouraged to join the auxiliary, but it is not mandatory. The dues are $5.00 a year. This organization provides financial support for the hospital as well as a source of good will. Through a variety of fundraising events the auxiliary makes the following financial gifts: guild fund (prescription assistance for needy), chaplain fund, oncology fund, hospice fund and various other departments within Southside Community Hospital. Auxilians also make teddy bears for patients and provide pink and blue hats for new babies in the Obstetric Department. One of the greatest commitments and contributions of the auxiliary is the hospital gift shop. The gift shop is stocked, operated and maintained seven days a week solely by the Auxiliary's™ volunteer labor.

Southside Community Hospital's™ Volunteers and the Auxiliary contribute approximately 17,000 hours total each year.
