Painting The Town Blue For Prostate Cancer Awareness.
Free PSA screening!
September is National Prostate Health Awareness Month. Join Centra in Painting the Town Blue for Prostate Cancer Awareness by wearing blue on Thursday, September 29. Through several partnerships with organizations across the region, the cancer center is bringing awareness and education to the community about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. Be sure to stop in at the Cafés at Centra Lynchburg General, Southside Community and Virginia Baptist hospitals on the 29th for our special Paint the Town Blue offering. And remember, wear blue! If you or a loved one have never been diagnosed with prostate cancer, have not been screened in the past year and are 50 or older (40 or older if there is family history of prostate cancer), please join us for this free PSA screening. This is a quick blood draw, no accompanying physical exam. The results will be mailed to you and the physician you request.

One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. In 2011, the American Cancer Society estimates that 240,890 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed, 97 percent of those men will be survivors. African American men have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer. Men should begin annual screenings at age 50. If there is family history of prostate cancer, screenings should begin at age 40.
